Merlotjolais-Nouveau
A light-hearted attempt to make a Beaujolais Nouveau in California, from Merlot grapes.
Luscious clusters of organic Merlot were hand-harvested from a small Mill Creek vineyard on a breezy September day. Whole clusters were loaded into a sealed bin for a two week carbonic maceration, then foot-tread (pigéage) and pressed in a hand-crank basket press. Settled in 50% new French oak and bottled in February 2023 with youthful exuberance.
Features artwork by the incredible Alice Sutro, who masterfully drew my two boy’s faces as stone gargoyles.
